Cost Effective Concrete Lifting

How much does mudjacking cost?

  • Typically lifting driveways cost between $800 and $1500 which will usually include the price to lift uneven sidewalks to the front steps.

  • Lifting sidewalks and patios usually cost between $600 and $1300.

How does mudjacking work?

  • The process of mudjacking can be broken down into three primary steps: Drilling of holes, pumping a slurry through these holes, and patching.

  • Inch and a half holes are drilled at a spacing of 2-3 feet either in a single line or a grid formation within the region that requires lifting.

  • Then a highly water-resistant clay/silt slurry is pumped through the holes spreading under the concrete until the pressure increases so much as to lift the concrete. Mudjacking is observably effective at filling voids as it is common to see the slurry rise out of neighboring holes to the one being pumped into.

  • Lastly, a specialized rapid-set mortar is used to patch the holes.

Will I be able to see the patches?

  • Yes, on standard concrete you will be able to see the patches, though over time they will fade and begin to blend in with the surrounding surface.

  • On exposed aggregate concrete we mix stones into the patches rendering them unnoticeable.

Where is mudjacking applicable?

  • Mudjacking is effective in raising, leveling, filling voids, and establishing proper drainage on driveways, sidewalks, patios,
    garage floors and warehouses.

  • As a result of the clay-based subsoils, concrete slabs that are poured above ground have a tendency to settle.
Mudjacking reverses the effects of soft soil compression that is common in Edmonton and northern Alberta.

Am I better off replacing my concrete when it has settled?

  • No, due to the soft nature of Alberta subsoils, sunken concrete is a consistent feature of our urban environment.

  • Most settled concrete is still in very good condition and simply needs to be lifted and supported.

  • Though the subsoil may remain soft, time is the most critical factor in seeing the settling effects subside.

  • This is why we offer a 3 year written warranty on any concrete that has settled more than an inch after lifting.

Does mudjacking increase the strength of my concrete?

  • As mentioned above, most settled concrete is still in very good condition.

  • Mudjacking provides physical support to concrete that is hollow underneath, sagging and hanging off rebar tied to the foundations.

  • Mudjacking reduces the risk of cracking on the concrete itself, foundation damage resulting from pulling forces on rebar ties, and minimizes the amount of water that may travel under the driveway from rain, snowmelt, and eaves runoff.

Is foam jacking more effective than mudjacking?

  • No, though foam jacking works under the same principle as mudjacking, it utilizes an expanding and solidifying chemical compound. The issue is that the foam struggles to spread out and fill all the spaces under the concrete as it solidifies too quickly underneath, where mudjacking achieves a near complete fill beneath the concrete. The chemical compound used in foam is very costly, which is an expense passed onto the client. Lastly, though mudjacking does consume fuel in the lifting process, the material deposited beneath the concrete is 100% natural, unlike the foam which is not recyclable nor biodegradable.
